Dr. Nadia Rainer
"The Bodyworker" — Somatic Psychotherapy
About This Mentor
Dr. Rainer works in the tradition of Somatic Psychotherapy, a school pioneered by Wilhelm Reich that treats the body not as separate from the mind, but as its living record. Tension, posture, breath, and physical sensation are read as emotional data. Sessions pay close attention to what the body holds that words alone cannot reach.
Inspired by the tradition of Wilhelm Reich.
About Somatic Psychotherapy
Somatic Psychotherapy has its roots in the work of Wilhelm Reich, a student of Freud who became convinced that psychological conflicts are not only stored in the mind but literally held in the body. Reich introduced the concept of "character armor," the idea that chronic muscular tension develops as a physical defense against emotional pain and becomes a permanent feature of posture, movement, and breathing patterns.
Since Reich, somatic approaches have diversified considerably. Alexander Lowen's Bioenergetic Analysis, Peter Levine's Somatic Experiencing, Pat Ogden's Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and various body-oriented mindfulness approaches all share the core insight that the body is not merely a vehicle for the mind but an active participant in psychological life.
Somatic therapy sessions often involve attention to physical sensations, breathing patterns, posture, and movement. The therapist may notice that a client holds their breath when discussing certain topics, clenches their jaw, or shifts their posture. These bodily responses are treated as meaningful communication, often revealing emotions and memories that verbal processing alone cannot access. The approach is particularly valuable for trauma, anxiety, chronic stress, and the pervasive disconnection from embodied experience that characterizes modern life.
