About Psychoanalysis
Psychoanalysis is one of the foundational approaches to understanding the human mind. Developed by Sigmund Freud in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it proposes that much of our mental life operates beneath conscious awareness. Unconscious desires, fears, and memories shape our behavior, relationships, and emotional responses in ways we rarely recognize on the surface.
Central to psychoanalysis are concepts like free association (speaking without censorship to reveal hidden thoughts), dream analysis (interpreting the symbolic language of dreams), and the exploration of early childhood experiences that continue to influence adult life. The therapeutic relationship itself becomes a window into these patterns through what Freud called transference.
Psychoanalysis has evolved significantly since Freud's time, branching into many schools including ego psychology, object relations theory, and self psychology. Its influence extends far beyond the consulting room into literature, art, film, philosophy, and everyday language.
