"The Mirror" — Object Relations Theory

About This Mentor

Dr. Marsh works in the tradition of Object Relations Theory, a school of depth psychology developed by Melanie Klein that traces how early relationships become internalized as psychological 'objects' coloring every relationship that follows. Sessions explore the emotional residue of your earliest bonds and how they quietly live on in the present.

Inspired by the tradition of Melanie Klein.

About Object Relations Theory

Object Relations Theory is a branch of psychoanalytic thought that focuses on how our earliest relationships, particularly with primary caregivers, become internalized as mental representations that shape all subsequent relationships. The word "object" refers not to a thing but to the internal image of another person that we carry within us.

Melanie Klein, one of the theory's most influential architects, proposed that even in infancy, we engage in complex emotional processes: splitting the world into good and bad, projecting unwanted feelings onto others, and internalizing the qualities of the people around us. These early patterns persist into adult life, influencing how we love, trust, fear, and connect.

Object relations therapy helps people become aware of these internalized relationship templates, understand how they formed, and gradually develop more nuanced, flexible ways of relating to others. It has been particularly influential in understanding personality disorders, attachment difficulties, and the deep emotional underpinnings of relationship patterns.
