About This Mentor

Dr. Delgado works in the tradition of Family Systems Therapy, an approach developed by Virginia Satir that sees the individual as inseparable from the web of relationships that shaped them. Sessions explore family roles, communication patterns, and the unspoken rules inherited across generations.

About Family Systems Therapy

Family Systems Therapy emerged in the mid-20th century as therapists began recognizing that individual problems often reflect dynamics within the family system. Virginia Satir, often called the "Mother of Family Therapy," was one of its most influential pioneers. She believed that families function as interconnected systems where each member's behavior affects and is affected by everyone else.

Satir identified several key communication stances people adopt under stress: placating, blaming, being super-reasonable, and being irrelevant. She proposed that healthy families move toward a fifth stance, congruent communication, where inner experience and outer expression align. Her work emphasized self-worth, clear communication, and the family's capacity for growth and change.

Family systems thinking has expanded far beyond Satir's original work, incorporating structural, strategic, and Bowenian approaches. Common concepts include family roles (the hero, the scapegoat, the lost child), triangulation, enmeshment, boundaries, and intergenerational patterns. The core insight remains: to understand a person, you must understand the system that shaped them.
