"The Realist" — Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy

About This Mentor

Dr. Colby works in the tradition of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), a direct, unsentimental approach developed by Albert Ellis built on the premise that it is not events that disturb us, but the irrational beliefs we hold about them. Sessions are frank, sometimes bluntly challenging, and focused on dismantling the rigid demands we place on ourselves and the world.

Inspired by the tradition of Albert Ellis.

About Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, created by Albert Ellis in 1955, is considered the first form of cognitive behavioral therapy. Ellis developed REBT after becoming disillusioned with psychoanalysis, finding it too slow and indirect. He proposed a more active, confrontational approach centered on identifying and disputing irrational beliefs.

REBT uses the ABC model: an Activating event triggers a Belief, which produces a Consequence (emotional or behavioral). Ellis argued that most emotional disturbance comes not from events themselves but from "musturbatory" thinking, rigid demands that things must, should, or ought to be a certain way. When reality fails to comply with these demands, we disturb ourselves.

The therapeutic process involves disputing these irrational beliefs through logical analysis, empirical testing, and pragmatic evaluation. Ellis was known for his wit, directness, and irreverence. REBT encourages unconditional self-acceptance, high frustration tolerance, and a philosophical stance that allows for preferences without rigid demands. It remains influential as both a therapeutic method and a practical philosophy for everyday resilience.
